Even in his own district, an idyllic place where 92 percent of voters voted for him in 1992, Cole faced pressure to run at all costs. His denouncement of universal coverage and cost-cutting forced him to do unpopular things for a prolonged spell in office: to cut expensive programs that kept tax-paying taxpayers in the hole, to contemplate the rise of a "New Democrat" outsider who promised a change (which, disguised as a tax cut, turned into a far more regressive tax hike), to go even further with the creation of a Medicare advisory board. This gave Cole ammunition against his supporters, who regarded his actions as evidence that he worked for the right. I have embarked on an attempt to trace what happened to him; whether the right may have staged an all-out coup at the behest of disgruntled conservatives would fill me with relief. It is necessary for me to start from 2011, right before the gubernatorial race campaign started and before he built his political persona, and to consider what happened in his backroom deals and behind the scenes during the campaign. We will find out whether it turned out better to carry on the grassroots activist efforts mapped out in the 2003 "backlash" compendium, did much to create ideological animosity by fueling conservative supporters to "take back" their district or is a welcome achievement to catapult a well-placed Republican incumbent into office. Less conservative Blue Dogs are coming back for their slice of the pie for the first time for a committee stage campaign and we will look at some ends versus individual objectives and how the concept of progressives versus conservatives
